During the 2019 General Election campaign, I attended a meeting of the Mid-Cheshire Rail Users Association, and heard how many promises, over many years, to restore two-hourly train services on this long-neglected line, had come to nothing. A while later, following a letter to the local paper by a concerned local resident, whose daughter and friends were unable to use the train service for travelling to school in Altrincham, because of it infrequency and unreliability, I joined a local campaigning group, to see what could be done. I supported their efforts by contacting Cheshire East Council, Transport for the North, and Northern Rail. Despite our repeated efforts to raise the profile of this issue, Esther McVey’s party have continued to pour money into their failed HS2 white elephant project rather than investing in local services where it matters.
